Part 1: Old Streets

25th March 4pm - 6pm

Chapel Street, meeting in the Crescent Pub.

Join us on the 25th March at 4pm when local historian Tony Flynn will take us on a guided tour of Chapel Street. Find out all about the fascinating social & cultural history of the heart of Salford and share your own stories:

You may have passed along this busy thoroughfare many times before, but now you can learn about its fascinating history which dates back to 1634.

Learn about the incredible architecture, the number of listed buildings (the highest concentration in one place in Salford), the first public built cinema in Salford, the birthplace of Vimto, Salford's Boer War Memorial, the site of the last public hangings in Salford and the story of the Manchester Martyrs, immortalised in Irish Republican history, mass burial pits and much more. If you are still interested then read on!

The first street in the world to be lit by gas lighting in 1806, what connection do William Webb Ellis and Ruth Cavell have with Trinity Church?, The Battle of Bexley Square; the scene of the largest outbreak of civil disobedience in Salford’s history, Salford’s largest hospital and how 14 nurses died in the 1941 Christmas blitz, Dandy and Beano comics printed on Chapel Street, The Lusitania riots....the list is endless.

So if you are up for a bit of culture with a difference (and shame on you if you are not) meet us in the Crescent pub at 4pm for a Salford stroll!
